Chunky antique Victorian double Albert chain. This chain would have originally been made for and worn with a gentleman's pocket watch. We think it's a wonderful additional to an jewellery lover's wardrobe - a chunky chain is always in fashion! This piece is formed from two equal lengths of graduated sterling silver curb chain. They are a perfect match with a dog clip on each end. In the middle is a small drop with a coin dating to 1840 on it.

Kris is quite keen on coins and has investigated this one for us! It's a 4d piece, or groat, worth four pence, which was introduced 1836 - 1855, and then briefly again in 1888. It was argued in parliament that it would be convenient for paying cab fares. However, it proved unpopular with cabbies who were used to being paid with a six pence without the being asked for change. Lucky them! You can see why the cab drivers might not like this new coin.

I love this chain for it's wave look. Each individual curb link has a swell appearance and the matching sides graduate, creating a wave up and down. Other charms or pendants could easily be added to the drop where the coin currently hangs. Circa late 19th century, turn of the 20th century.

This piece has three sets of matching hallmarks for Birmingham 1899 on the dog clips and centre bolt ring. Each individual curb link is marked with the lion for sterling silver.

Measures approx 40.5 cm / 16 inches wearable length. Coin drops approx 4 cm / 1.75 inches. Curb links are between 5.5 mm and 7.3 mm wide.

Weighs 43.7 grams.
