Old mine cut diamond pendant mounted in platinum. This spectacular diamond is has been hand cut during the 19th century, in a style meant to perform best in the lower lighting, such as candle light, common during that time. It has a large open culet, that's the bottom of the diamond that's normally pointed but is faceted in older cut diamonds, and is perfectly wonky, a testament to it's true antique, hand cut nature. The crown is high and pillowy, my favourite feature of antique diamonds. It's held in eight small claws in a collet that's very slightly wider, which, along with the wider flat bail, keeps the piece facing upright when worn.
The diamond dates to circa mid 19th century based on cutting style while the platinum mounting dates to the late 19th century to early 20th century. Platinum wasn't commonly used in jewellery until the late Victorian era (silver was). The bail is a later addition and perfectly matches in metal.
