Antique Victorian aesthetic movement etched silver book chain. This chain is beyond incredible! Wide scalloped edge links are wonderfully engraved with a fan design. The scalloped edge of these larger links combined with the engraving give the impression of a heart style design to my eyes. In the centre of these wider links is a small shiny silver bead. The narrow links have a more foliate or leaf style design. The engraving is wonderfully detailed and covers nearly every surface. This intricate chain, made of folded silver links (hence, book chain!) would have been for a large cameo, locket or statement pendant originally. Circa late 19th century, 1880s, British in origin.
In fantastic condition. To the point where my jeweller even remarked this is his favourite book chain.
Incredibly rarely, this chain is fully hallmarked. One link near the end has full hallmarks for sterling silver, assayed in Birmingham 1884. Most large links are also stamped with the lion for sterling silver. There's a maker's mark for J.B. Bs. I cannot find further details for this maker.
Measures approx 52 cm / 20 inches in total wearable length. The longer section is 47 cm / 18.25 inches in length and the shorter section is 5 cm / 1.75 inches in length. This chain is 18.9 mm / 0.75 inches at it's widest point. The oversized bolt clasps are 16.3 mm each in exterior diameter.
Weighs 41.9 grams.
