Antique seal set with a carnelian carved with a bird. What a wonderful piece! Animals in intaglios are always popular. I love the fondness that people feel for these precious creatures. This carnelian is carved with a dove holding an olive branch. The carnelian is a beautiful reddish-orange colour, a warm and cosy colour that was popular in the late Georgian to early Victorian era when this piece dates from. The handle of this fob is engraved with flowers around the edge, a ridged shell design on the top of where the stone is set, and a large scrolling flourish which is easy to grip and ends in a large bail. This allows this pieces to easily be worn. Circa early 19th century, British in origin. In good condition. The intaglio is in excellent condition, we couldn't ask for better! The gold fill top does show some signs of wear and use, in keeping with this piece being worn regularly over the last century and a half...or longer! Measures approx 25.1 mm / 1 inches tall with the base being 17.1 mm / 0.67 inches by 14.7 mm / 0.58 inches. Weighs 5.6 grams.
