Antique 9 carat gold shaker locket dating to the Edwardian era. What a wonderful find! We love a locket. We love a glass locket. And we especially love a locket which is deep enough to house a sentimental object. This one currently holds colourful rainbow opal cabochons.
This locket is crafted with a wide curved gold edge. The glass portholes are convex and lift out by gently tucking a fingernail under the visible edge and pulling them up. The deep interior can secure a variety of objects; a sweet love note, curls from first hair cuts, small and soft found objects such as shells. The locket secures by gently pressing the gold outer edge of the frame holding the glass. Circa early 20th century, 1904, making this piece over 120 years old.
In excellent condition! The hallmarks are slightly rubbed from age and use. The glass is in incredible condition, no chips or scratches. To keep the glass in good condition please only store fairly soft objects inside. We added cabochon cut opals. The rounded cabochon shape means no pointed edges and opals are a softer gemstone making them a safe choice.
Hallmarked for 9 carat gold at the bottom of mounting, assayed in Birmingham with the date letter for 1904. The gold frames around the glass are also hallmarked on the inside edge. The gold is between modern yellow and modern rose in colour with a lovely, warm peachy tint.
Measures approx 31.3 mm / 1.25 inches tall not including the bail, by 27.8 mm / 1.1 inches wide. The glass is approx 18.7 mm / 0.75 inches so anything stored inside would need to that size or smaller. 6 mm deep as measured from the exterior.
Weighs 4.65 grams total.
