Antique sterling silver stamp case pendant dating to the late 19th century. Designed as an envelope, the top flap opens and closes allowing for small items - such as stamps :) - to be stored inside. On the outside is a a red enamel stamp "United States Postage 2 Cents" and a postmark for New York 10, 6pm, 95 for 1895. The black enamel stamp on the other side reads P.O. 10.24.95 REC'D. The interior is has a light gold gilt wash. Circa late 19th century.
We've found similar designs, down to the patent date, by Gorham Manufacturing Company. A North American company in business from around the mid 18th century to mid 20th century.
In very good condition. The envelope closes tightly and flush with an audible snapping sound. This means it must be closed carefully so that the flap doesn't go inside the envelope. There wasn't a bail, just the loop, so we've added one making this a wearable piece again!
Interior is marked STERLING PAT JUNE 24, '90 for 1890.
Measures approx 35.6 mm / 1.3 inches tall not including bail by 25.4 mm / 1 inch wide by 4.8 mm / 0.19 inches deep.
Weighs 11.3 grams.
