Victorian pinchbeck earrings in a stunning tapered design. These pierced earrings are designed with a large golden sphere at the top with an articulated drop. The drop is tapered in shape with polished curved sections with a beaded design down the centre. Flaring out from the sides is a twisted rope style detail. Smaller golden balls accent the design. The back sides are simple with curved lines. Circa 1870s, likely British in origin.

Not marked, tested as pinchbeck with silver gilt earwires.

Pinchbeck was invented in the 18th century by Christopher Pinchbeck. It's an alloy of copper and zinc which is made to look like gold. Gold was expensive and this allowed more people access to jewellery which looked like gold. It could also be worn while travelling so in the event of a robbery one's actual gold wasn't stolen.

Measure approx 3.75 cm / 1.48 inches long by 1.5 cm / 0.60 inches wide.

Weigh 5.15 grams.
