Antique gilt metal long guard chain. This fancy link chain is crafted from a series of sturdy oval shaped links with larger decorative links at even intervals. Both terminating ends are attached to a jump ring which is attached to a large spring bolt clasp. Mid to late 1800s, French in origin.

This pieces is gilt metal. The process, called mercury gilding, was done a lot during the Victorian and earlier times. Gold is dissolved in mercury. The liquid is then heated so that the mercury evaporates leaving the gold behind which is then workable and can be applied to objects.
