Vintage ornate diamond solitaire engagement ring. A single diamond is set into an illusion style setting. This setting is ornately engraved in a way that designed to make the diamond look larger than it's actual size. Illusion settings were popular during the late Art Deco era to mid 20th century as diamonds increased in popularity and become affordable for more people. However, Europe between the wars and during World War II was far from rich so jewellers crafted settings in such a way to show them off and make them appear larger.

The same is true for the setting. The platinum topped setting has been engraved with faceted beads and dotted in milgrain beading. Both of these style features are designed to catch the light and sparkle, tricking the eye into thinking that the setting has been encrusted with diamonds. Niffy, right? The sides of this ring are split in design and engraved into a tapered shape in the centre with a long baguette shape on either side. The band contrasts in colour with the top and is a bright yellow gold court fit / comfort fit in shape. Circa 1930s - 1940s, British in origin.

Diamond: old European cut, measures approx 3 mm wide and is calculated in setting as 0.12 carats, H colour, I clarity.
