Antique carved natural red coral depicting a figa hand. This piece is designed as a closed fist around a rod. Examples of a figa have been found from the Roman era, it's a popular theme throughout history. There was a resurgence during the Victorian era, when this piece dates from. It is both a gesture considered to be good luck and obscene, depending on culture. I just love that about this! Such history! This piece dates to the mid to late 19th century, circa 1870s.
