Antique pinchbeck long guard chain. A long guard chain would have commonly held a watch or possibly a ladies muff. Today they are often worn around the neck several times for a layered look and the dog clip can hold a large locket, pendent or set of charms. Pinchbeck is a gold toned metal, an alloy of zinc and copper. Created in the 18th century by Mr. Christopher Pinchbeck. The alloy was made to resemble gold. It's invention made fashionable jewellery much more affordable. It was also worn during the travel in case of theft. This chain has been crafted as a heavy faceted design link. The links are very tactile, sliding through the fingers. Each terminating link is attached to a smaller jump ring which is attached to a large dog clip with the same faceted design. The dog clip swivels. Dates to the late Victorian era, likely European in origin.

Measures approx 144 cm / 56.7 inches long and 3.05 mm wide.

Weighs 27.3 grams.
